Western Valerian (Valerian occidentalis

Valerian is an awesome native plant. This photo, taken in the Mount Nebo Wilderness Area, shows the mutualistic and symbiotic relationship the plant has with ants. In return for nutrition from the plant, the ants offer protection from would be killers, such as the aphids seen in this picture. Beyond being nutritious for ants, Valerian is also edible for humans and is reputed for its ability to relieve anxiety, depression, and poor sleep. Valerian is also known for its funky odor, which some say is preferred by cats over catnip.

What mutualistic relationships might humans have formed with other organisms over the past two million years and are these relationships getting stronger or weaker? What are the repercussions of losing touch with these relationships?
